What is Aphasia?
Aphasia is an acquired language disorder usually caused by a stroke or brain injury. Aphasia may cause subtle or major changes to many forms of communication:
- speaking
- understanding
- reading
- writing
- signing (e.g., ASL)
About Us
The MSU Aphasia Lab, directed by Dr. Victoria Diedrichs, conducts research to better understand how the brain recovers from aphasia and to improve rehabilitation. We use neuroimaging methods, including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), to study the brain and examine the effects of treatment on language skills. The lab is especially interested in promoting meaningful communication in people with aphasia and exploring how unique personal characteristics, like lesion location, aphasia severity, and cognitive skills, may impact recovery.
